How Singapore is Helping Australia at a Time of Crisis

“A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.”

– Arnold H. Glasgow

Singapore and Australia have had a close relationship for over 50 years, with it being forged in World War II after more than 1,700 Australians died defending the country. Australia was also the first country in 1965 to establish diplomatic relations with the lion city, and since then the relationship has continued to flourish. As the saying goes, you don’t know who your true friends are until you’re really in a time of need, and this is entirely applicable to the current bushfire crisis that Australia finds itself in.

While we continue to be inundated with the ongoing politicking surrounding this bushfire crisis, and various parties throwing blame at each other, I would like to take the opportunity this week to highlight the incredible support that Singapore has provided to our great country at this time of need. As an Australian expat living and working in Singapore, it is inspiring to see this level of generosity and unwavering support for Australia.

  1. Singapore Air Force and Two Chinook Helicopters

On the 7th January, the Singapore Defence Minister announced that 42 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel were on their way to Australia with two Chinook helicopters to fight the blazes alongside the Australian Defence Force. The helicopters will also be used to provide evacuation support and delivery of emergency equipment where needed. In his announcement, Defence Minister Dr Ng highlighted that the bushfires had already damaged land that is equivalent to 80 times Singapore.

  1. Australian Alumni of Singapore

The Australian Alumni of Singapore, a group for those graduates of Australian colleges and universities living and working in Singapore, is raising $100,000 to be donated to the Red Cross to assist with the bushfire fighting efforts.

  1. Australian Chamber of Commerce Singapore (AustCham)

AustCham Singapore is seeking to raise $1,000,000 ($1M) via the upcoming ANZ Australia Day Ball in conjunction with the Red Cross of Singapore to be donated to the bushfire appeal.

  1. Singapore Red Cross

The Singapore Red Cross, in recognition of the mighty efforts of its sister organisation, the Australian Red Cross, has launched a public appeal to allow for online donations to be made to support the firefighting efforts in Australia. They have initially pledged $50,000 in humanitarian aid and support to the cause, and to date (18 Jan 2020) they have raised just shy of $200,000 from online donations from the community of Singapore.

There are many other organisations in Singapore and charities that are setting up product sales and events with proceeds going to help fight the bushfires in Australia and to provide support to those communities impacted, and we are incredibly grateful for the generous support. I have outlined below a range of options for you to get involved, give back, or show your support in some way at this time of need:

Donate to the Key Organisations

Supporting the State Fire Services

Helping the Animals and Wildlife

I also know that there are many shops, brands, and individuals running different events to raise money to support Australia at this time. If you’re running an event or know of someone who is, please post the details in the comments so that we can help to spread the word.
